Make time in August to engage in a community service project that connects youth and elders in our community and then challenge others to do the same. The goal is to have projects that reflect our city’s creativity, diversity, and needs.

2018 National Veterans Golden Age Games | Presented by Department of Veterans Affairs
Friday, August 3 through Wednesday, August 8
The National Veterans Golden Age Games is the premier senior adaptive rehabilitation program in the United States, and the only national multi-event sports and recreational seniors’ competition program designed to improve the quality of life for all older Veterans, including those with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.

Guest Chefs Needed | Presented by Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico
Be a Guest Chef at the Ronald McDonald House. Cook dinner for the families staying in the House.

Volunteers make the difference in the lives of all the families that come through our doors – cooking, hosting, listening, nurturing, or by simply being there and helping out in any way they can.
Become a Foster Grandparent! | Presented by City of Albuquerque Senior Affairs
Foster Grandparents work one-on-one with children in the community, under the supervision of a teacher or site professional. Foster Grandparents can be placed in schools, head start programs, daycare centers and pre-schools. An average of 20 hours a week to volunteer and volunteers may receive meals and/or non-taxable stipend if income-eligible. The Department of Senior Affairs offers monthly training got interested participants. Call 505-764-6412 for more information.

Become a Senior Companion through the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Senior Affairs and provide needed companionship and assistance to homebound seniors in our community!

The City of Albuquerque’s Department of Senior Affairs offers a Retired Senior Volunteer Program for those age 55+ who volunteer or wish to find a meaningful place to volunteer in the community.

Horses Connecting People | Presented by Enchanted Equine Adventures
Sunday, August 19 from 1 pm – 4 pm
For our One ABQ Challenge, we will be offering a free class on how to be a horse leader. Horse leaders are necessary in therapeutic riding when a client can’t control the horse themselves or has anxiety
about controlling the horse themselves. We will teach kids and adults how to safely work around horses and how to convince the horse to willingly follow their lead.
We also have opportunities for ranch clean up and repairs during this time.

Amy Biehl High School Literature Circles | Presented by Amy Biehl High School
Help students develop literacy and communication skills by participating in a small book-club-style discussion a few times a month with a small group of sophomores or juniors at Amy Biehl High School.

4th Annual De-Stash Sale | Presented by Albuquerque Modern Quilt Guild
Saturday, August 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Albuquerque Modern Quilt Guild host a fabric and notions De-Stash Sale at the Jewish Community Center with net proceeds going to educational programs for kids’ sewing initiatives.

Hands Across Time NM Design Concept Sketch Contest – Connecting Youth and Elders | Presented by Hands Across Time NM
Saturday, August 18 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Hands Across Time NM want to engage you in the design concepts for future New Mexico inter-generational communities. HATNM will bring together youth and elders as they encourage teams made up of youth and elder artists to join together on each sketch design for a contest.
Yard Clean-up for Senior Citizens | Presented by City of Albuquerque Senior Affairs
Ongoing during the month of August
This event will require a large group participation to assure the yard is cleaned for safety of the elderly client and safety of the neighborhood.

Project Full – (No longer seeking volunteers)
BGCCNM Teen Cuisine | Presented by Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico
Five elderly volunteers will collaborate with teen members of the Boys & Girls Club of Central New Mexico Seligman Branch to make new and old recipes come together. Teen Nights allow the entire club to be used specifically for teen centered programs. Our teen members want to cook weekly dinners for these nights with the elderly volunteers in order to develop closer community and cultural relationships through authentic cuisine.
Staff Volunteering at Casa Esperanza | Presented by Casa Esperanza
This event is limited to Keres staff/family members and residents of Casa Esperanza.
Volunteers make a significant difference in the lives of the families who stay at Casa Esperanza. Keres employees will give of their time and loving spirits to fill the bellies of Casa Esperanza residents.
