Frankie Ballard grew up in Battle Creek, Mich., where his father played Marty Robbins’ album Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, featuring the hit song El Paso, over and over. Years later, Ballard found himself headed to that West Texas town of El Paso to record a follow-up to his 2014 breakout Sunshine & Whiskey.
The country singer and guitarist is set to headline a special Father’s Day concert at the ABQ BioPark Zoo on Sunday, June 18. The Zoo is celebrating by offering dads $1 admission all day. In addition to Ballard, Farewell Angelina and Max Gomez also will perform.
Ballard’s latest album, El Rio, was released last June and includes singles It All Started with a Beer, Cigarette and You’ll Accomp’ny Me. It debuted 9th on the Top Country Albums charts. He describes his track El Camino as a definitive song for him. “If somebody asked, ‘Hey, what is this new Frankie Ballard sound?’ El Camino would be the song I played them,” Ballard said.
Max Gomez grew up splitting his time between Taos and Kansas, where his family still has a ranch. The singer-songwriter took to blues at an early age immersing himself in traditional folk blues before turning his interest to American folk music. His album Rule The World contains themes of heartbreak, regret, young love, desperation and redemption.
Farewell Angelina is an all-female country group featuring four singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists. Their blend of stringed instruments has taken Nashville by storm. Farewell Angelina has been described as having a Dixie Chicks-like vibe. Earlier this year, the group was named as Taste of Country Hot Seat winner.
Gates open at 9 a.m. with Discovery Stations throughout the Zoo from 11 a.m-2 p.m. Those dads looking to make a splash can enjoy the “Dad Dunk” tanks from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
There also will be food and beverage options and exclusive ABQ BioPark event giveaways.
Again, dads get in for $1 while regular admission applies to all others. Zoo tickets can be purchased in advance at https://goo.gl/zMMHO4 or at the gate.
