5th Annual John Lewis Celebration in Albuquerque with Eric Bibb
Please note, this event has expired.
One of the leading bluesmen of his generation, Grammy nominated guitarist and singer, Eric Bibb returns once again for the 5th Annual John Lewis Celebration. He will be accompanied by multi-instrumentalist, roots music master, Michael Jerome Browne, who has performed & recorded with Bibb for many years. The son of folk musician Leon Bibb, and nephew of John Lewis, Eric Bibb was raised in New York in a household filled with music, where family friends included Pete Seeger, Odetta, Bob Dylan, and Paul Robeson (Bibb’s godfather). Bibb relocated to Paris at age 19, later settling in Scandanavia where he has lived for many years. He has recorded and performed with Taj Mahal, Pops and Mavis Staples, Bonnie Raitt, Mamadou Diabate, Rory Block, Habib Koite and many others. His latest release, The Happiest Man in the World (2017) was called “an essential contemporary blues disc” by Living Blues. His career spans five decades, 36 albums, and a schedule of non-stop touring. Bibb was nominated for nine W.C. Handy Blues Music Awards and named the Memphis Blues Foundation’s Artist of the Year in 2013. Tonight’s concert builds on a previous visit by Bibb for which Santa Fe pianist/composer/arranger, John Rangel arranged several Bibb compositions for string quartet and Bibb. These pieces plus some new ones, including a John Lewis composition, will be performed once again tonight. The string quartet, organized by another of John Lewis’ cousins, violinist and Santa Fe resident, William “Bill” Houston, also features violinist David Felberg; violist Shanti Randall; and cellist, Joel Becktell. John Aaron Lewis grew up in Albuquerque and graduated from Albuquerque High after which he attended the University of New Mexico majoring in Music and Anthropology. He went on to international renown as a performer, composer, and educator, and as a founder of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Lewis passed away in 2001 at age 81. Shortly thereafter, the South Broadway Cultural Center auditorium was named the John Lewis Theater.
