Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Allowed to Grow Old, a selection of photographs by Isa Leshko and For-Get-Me-Not, a series of collages by Valerie Roybal. Isa Leshko makes black-and-white portraits of animals who live out the end of their lives at animal sanctuaries and farms. Valerie Roybal collaged vintage illustrations of anatomy, plants, and flowers onto found antique portraits.
Allowed to Grow Old takes an unflinching look at the artist’s own fear of aging through a series of intimate portraits of elderly animals. A monograph with the same title was released this month by University of Chicago Press, and the artist will be signing books at the gallery reception on May 3rd. Leshko has work in public and private collections worldwide, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Fidelity Investments; and Boston Public Library.
For-Get-Me-Not consists of works made from found cabinet cards and cartes-de-visite on which Roybal collaged and painted. Each of these collages is a beautiful and mysterious visual expression of the artist’s experience living with an incurable disease. Roybal received a Fulcrum Fund grant to produce a book to accompany this exhibition, For-Get-Me-Not: Words and Images on Living with Incurable Cancer, and to raise awareness about this disease. Selections from this project were recently acquired by the Albuquerque Museum. Roybal passed away in late 2018 after living with stage IV metastatic breast cancer for more than seven years.
In the Project Room the gallery presents Gold Leaf Trees, photographs by Daniel Ballesteros. In this series, Ballesteros uses trees as witnesses to gun violence, urbanization, and climate change by gilding over all manmade structures within each image and leaving only vegetation visible. Ballesteros has been an artist-in-residence at the Woodstock Center for Photography, the Camera Club of New York, and Kala Art Institute, San Francisco. Originally from St. Louis, Ballesteros currently resides in Oakland.
The gallery reception on May 3rd includes a book signing with artist Isa Leshko for her new monograph Allowed to Grow Old and debut for the For-Get-Me-Not benefit honoring late artist Valerie Roybal, including the book release for this project. All proceeds from For-Get-Me-Not support Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s Metastatic Programs. Artworks from this benefit are available for purchase online.
