The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department will host a celebration of International Water Safety Day on Wednesday, May 15, at the Wilson Pool, 6000 Anderson Avenue SE, 87108 as well as the Rio Grande Outdoor Pool, 1410 Iron Avenue SW, 87102. The event will take place from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., and will include a variety of water experiences designed to improve the public’s awareness of the need for safety vigilance in and around the water. We will also give Coupons for 50% off swimming lesson registration for the first 50 people.
We know how strong of a pull our open water and swimming pools can have on someone on a hot day. We want to encourage people to take advantage of our pools but advise parents to never let their guard down around the water. As someone who works in the Aquatics realm, the drowning statistics are most troubling because I know drowning can be avoided with adequate attention, caution, and development of swimming skills.
As part of International Water Safety Day, Aquatics lifeguards and pool management at the Wilson and Rio Grande Pools will put on water safety demonstrations and provide instructions to children in the neighborhood who have proper swimming attire. Members of the public will also receive information about lessons offered throughout the City and lifeguards will be available to discuss swimming pool etiquette and safety.
International Water Safety Day will take place in countries across the globe to bring attention to the fact that drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death worldwide. On average, 30,000 drowning deaths occur monthly around the world, and the City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to making the upcoming summer season safe for everyone who uses one of the City’s 15 aquatic facilities. The official 2019 summer pool hours will begin Saturday, May 25th, the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend.
