“The Lion King Jr.” on South Broadway stage starting December 2
Cardboard Playhouse young actors bring popular story to life
ALBUQUERQUE, NM -The talented youngsters who comprise the company of Cardboard Playhouse Theatre return to the stage at South Broadway Cultural Center on Friday, Dec. 2 for a two-weekend run of the highly popular story “The Lion King.”
Based on the mega-hit Broadway production directed by Tony-winning Julie Taymor, The Lion King Jr. shares the well-known story of Simba, the adventurous lion cub born to the king of the pride. After the loss of his father, Simba leaves his home to wander and try to discover his own destiny, meeting a very colorful cast of characters along the way. An epic battle with his evil uncle and an opportunity to find true love are key to his ultimate choice to take on the mantle of “king.” Two songs for the film and stage production have become classics, “Hakuna Matata” and the Oscar-winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” as well as other hit songs created for the Broadway production.
A treat for all ages, performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3 at 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m.; and repeat at the same days and times the following weekend, Dec. 9, 10 and 11. Reserved seating tickets are $10 each and are available at www.southbroadwaytickets.com.
A non-profit formed December 2004, Cardboard Playhouse Theatre Company prides itself on being one of the only children’s theatre companies in Albuquerque that casts children on their ability to perform, not on their ability to pay. CPTC keeps itself viable by generating revenue through ticket sales and grants. Cardboard Playhouse Theatre Company was voted by the readers and editors of Albuquerque The Magazine as one of the top five theatre companies in Albuquerque. Cardboard Playhouse is in residence at South Broadway Cultural Center.
