    Symposium: Digital Latin America

    516 ARTS announces Digital Latin America Symposium for the opening weekend of the Digital Latin America exhibition. The Symposium will showcase presentations on creative innovation using digital media as well as artistic and scientific crossovers in contemporary Latin American new media art. The two-day symposium features eight sessions in one track, so participants can attend all of the programs. Sessions include: Keynote Speaker: Pablo Helguera Mexican keynote speaker Pablo Helguera, Director of Adult and Academic Programs at the Museum of Modern Art, will present on the subjects of social networks and the relationship between on site and online. Exploring Language and Communication through New Media Digital Latin America exhibition artists Paula Gaetano-Adi from Argentina, Paola Torres Nuez del Prado from Peru, Gabriel Vanegas from Colombia and Matt Garcia of the U.S. will speak about revitalizing lost/fading languages of Central America and the Southwestern United States, challenges of speaking a foreign language in a new country, communication through auditory and tactile means, and communication between humans and machines. Indigenous Pop: Music and the Digital Presence of Sisa Toaquiza, Flor de los Andes The Internet and digital media have made music from different artists and cultures more attainable. In this presentation UNM Professors Miguel Gandert and Enrique Lamadrid will present the music and digital media of Sisa Toaquiza a Tiqua from the Ecuadorian Highlands, and will examine how the digital age has effected her music, marketing and presentation, while maintaining a fidelity to the narrative and politics of her native culture. ? Territory of the Imagination: Reimagining the Borders of Art and Space Territory of the Imagination is a collaborative project that looks at the work of artists who engage in disruptive, alternative and collective interactions with space and space technology.? This session features Kerry Doyle, Curator & Director of Rubin Center for the Visual Arts and Nahum Mantra, curator of Gravedad de los Asuntos, a multi year project in which nine Mexican artists develop and execute projects in zero gravity. They will discuss the ways in which artists from countries around the globe working with new or emerging space programs are changing the way we conceptualize our understanding and exploration of space. NW Albuquerque, NM 87104 Registration opens Tuesday, March 11, 2014 (link to be announced) General Admission: $55 ?516 ARTS Members: $50 Students: $25 The Digital Latin America Downtown Block Party is part of the opening weekend events on Saturday, June 7, 2014, 5-9pm on Central Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets.
