The sights and sounds of summer in Albuquerque wouldn’t be complete without the City of Albuquerque’s Summerfest events. This year’s lineup of national musical guests ranges from the rock and roll King of the Twist to the best dressed band from Boston.
Kicking off the season is the Heights Summerfest on Saturday, June 10 from 5-10:30 p.m. North Domingo Baca Park will be the backdrop for the American ska punk band The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Often credited as one of the originators of ska punk genre and the creators of its subgenre ska-core – a form of music which mixes elements of ska with punk rock and hardcore – The Bosstones (informally referred to as) first came onto the scene in 1989. After the release of the album Devil’s Night Out, the band toured and recorded extensively throughout the 1990s. They became a key figure in popularizing ska punk in musical mainstream. In 1997, The Bosstone’s, Let’s Face It album went platinum with its hit single The Impression That I Get. Their latest album, The Magic of Youth, was released in 2011.
Everyone will get their kicks at the Route 66 Summerfest in Historic Nob Hill on Saturday, July 22 from 3-10 p.m. Los Lobos, a local favorite, is sure to bring the crowds out in the middle of summer. The multiple Grammy-award winning Mexican American band from East
Los Angeles will play hits from their many albums including their newest,Gates of Gold. Gates of Gold begins with the reflective, mid-tempo rocker Made to Break Your Heart, featuring female vocalist Syd Straw. When We Were Free and There I Go are also on the album. Now in their fifth decade as a band, Los Lobos continue to tour constantly. Their musical influences range from rock and roll to Tex-Mex from folk to cumbia. On October 9, 2015, Los Lobos was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time.
Downtown Summerfest on Civic Plaza will feature Dennis DeYoung:
The Music of Styx on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 5-10:30 p.m. Dennis DeYoung is a founding member of Styx and the lead singer and writer on seven of the bands eight Top Ten hits. His live concert with six piece band showcases all the Styx greatest hits spanning the 70s, 80s and 90s. The set includes all eight top Top 10 hits including Lady, Babe, Come Sail Away, Too Much Time on My Hands, Best of Times, Mr. Roboto, plus classic rock anthems Renegade, Blue Collar Man, Suite Madame Blue, Rockin the Paradise and more. DeYoung is a legendary singer, songwriter, keyboardist, composer and record producer with a career spanning more than 40 years. His voice is one of the most recognizable in the music world today.
Known as The King of Twist, Chubby Checker will headline the final installment of the summer series at the Westside Summerfest on Saturday, Aug. 27 in Cottonwood Corners from 5-10:30 p.m. Checker revolutionized popular culture and changed the music business forever. He performed the hit sensation The Twist on American Bandstand in 1960 in what was called the dawn of a new era in rock and roll. He stands alone with 36 hit records, the only artist to have a single go to # 1 twice and, according to Billboard, has the # 1 single for the whole decade of the 60s. Checker was awarded the first Platinum Single, the first Rock Grammy and has sold and more than 250,000,000 records over the years.
Admission to all Summerfests is free. Summerfest goers can expect to see live music from local bands leading up to these national headliners as well as a market of specialized goods provided by local artisans, free children’s activities, local brews and spirits in the Microbrew Garden and plenty of culinary delights from local food trucks at each event.
