Architect/landscape architect by training and profession, Karin began watercolor painting during her architectural education at Arizona State University. Karin has studied watercolor painting with a range of prominent southwest and national watercolor painters including Stephen Quiller, Ann Smith, Dale Laitinen, Mary Todd Beam, Robert Oliver, Dick Phillips, Wendell Bertelsen, JK Drummond, Carol Carpenter, and Dorothy Voohrees. Karin?s work has been included in juried exhibitions and art fairs in both Arizona and New Mexico including Masterworks of New Mexico and the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair. Artist's Statement: ?While I believe realistic watercolor painting has its place, I primarily enjoy painting realistic subjects in non-realistic colors or playing with patterns, color, and forms. Since my work as an architect requires precision and functionality, in my work as a painter, I enjoy the chance to explore, expand, and express my creativity. Though I don?t usually begin my work with a conscious statement in mind, I do feel compelled to paint some subjects more than others. When a subject ?calls me? to paint, it is there that I find the excitement and inspiration which leads me on a journey to record the image, sense or feeling that first triggered an emotion in me.? A former faculty associate at Arizona State University, where she taught beginning architecture students to sketch, Karin currently serves as Adjunct Faculty at ITT Technical Institute, and is Owner of Designabilities, a design consulting firm. She has developed and taught a variety of classes in drawing, sketching and painting at Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm, and for religious on sabbatical at the Canossian Spirituality Center in Albuquerque?s south valley. Karin?s work has been published in Architectural Record magazine, The Albuquerque Journal, Builders? News magazine, and in Drawing Shortcuts, 2nd Edition. Born the daughter of an Army officer in Stuttgart, West Germany, Karin moved around extensively during the early part of her life. However, more recently, Karin has lived in New Mexico for more than 21 years. An avid traveler, Karin enjoys taking her watercolor and sketching supplies wherever and whenever she goes.
